WILDLIFE

WEESGERUS

September 2022

Whenever you plan your next camping trip or quick weekend breakway from city life Weesgerus is one of those resorts that is always at the back of your mind. In September my dad suggested that we go camping at Weesgerus and there was finally an opportunity to go back after many years of absence.

It was wonderful to see the resort in such a pristine condition. Being a regular visitor to Weesgerus mostly visiting for conferences and work, my colleagues and I always stayed in the chalets, so this was my first-time camping at Weesgerus.

Located in the southern part of Limpopo close to the Gauteng border Weesgerus is just a kilometre or so outside Modimolle and if you take the N1, North approximately a 2-hour drive from Johannesburg. The roads are in a good condition. You should have no trouble getting there. Once passing through Kranskop Toll Gate, make sure you use the left lane, take the R33 Modimole Offramp and travel through the town. Be mindful of the speed limits, soon you will find Weesgerus on your left-hand side.

Our booking was midweek from Wednesday departing the Sunday. Booking at this resort was easy and trouble free. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Once you make payment you are provided with a booking confirmation as well as the Rules and Regulations for the resort. Attached to the booking you will find a list of emergency numbers which might come in handy.

Weesgerus is a typical bushveld resort and in September it is already hot. Although there are stands with some shade it is better to come prepared with reflective blankets. Be prepared for those afternoon highveld thunderstorms. Your stand is allocated prior to entry; but if not fully satisfied you can take a drive through the resort choose one or two stands and ask the staff if those are available.

Weesgerus offers four types of accommodation; the caravan park or camping site, chalets, guest houses, and there is also guest rooms to choose from. When entering the resort the chalets are located on the right and upper end. The camping site is on the left more towards the bottom of the park. The stands are spacious and we were able to easily pitch two Tentco Senior Bow tents. Stands are level and paved.

Stands at the campsite are spaced around in a circle with the ablutions and kitchens situated in the middle only a few meters away from where you are camping. Stands are relatively close to each other so if you are looking for some privacy between you and your neighbour it is best to book during the week or opt for one of the stands furthest away from the entrance and pool area.

Each of the stands come with a shared water tap and built-in braai. Electricity is a normal three-point outlet. We prefer the camping sites furthest away from the entrance and main pool areas as there is some noise emanating from the nearby road at night, as well as what seems to be the boiler used for heating the pools.

As for the ablutions, when you camp at any resort the only thing that is really required is that they are clean and well-maintained with hot water and good water pressure; you get all of this at Weesgerus. There are separate facilities for men and women. Ablutions are cleaned regularly. Shower cubicles are modern and private, and the water pressure is good. We did not experience any trouble with hot water. The scullery is situated in the same building as the bathrooms.

Weekends can get busy with people and families starting to arrive on Friday afternoon till early in the evenings. If you camp out of season and during the week, you are assured of a quiet and peaceful bushveld experience. We did not experience any unnecessary noise or disturbances over the weekend; none the less this is a family resort and it is also advertised as such.

There is no shortage of entertainment during weekends. At the pool area on Saturdays there is something to do for everyone. Weesgerus has four pools, three on the outside of which one is heated as well as an indoor heated pool. The water snake is situated next to the swimming pools. One can easily spend an entire day swimming and just relaxing on the green grass under the palm trees surrounding the pools.

A miniature golf course, or putt-putt, and tennis court are onsite. The resort is big enough for those that like to take an early morning or late afternoon stroll.

The shop located at the entrance of the pool area is stocked with most camping necessities like wood, charcoal, and firelighters. There is a takeaway restaurant where you can order light meals. And don’t forget Modimole is just a fewminutes’ drive from Weesgerus if you are in urgent need of supplies that may not be available at the resort.

Next to the swimming pool area and conference centre is a lovely picnic spot with lush green grass under large trees that one can easily overlook. When temperatures start climbing at the resort this spot provides for cool afternoon relaxation in the shade.

As far as wildlife is concerned there is some Rooibok roaming freely inside the resort although they tend to disappear into the bushes over weekends when the resort becomes busy. If you are into bird watching, we suggest you bring along your binoculars as there are plenty of bird species to see.

There is a Dam Lapa at the resort overlooking a beautiful dam that is advertised as being closed, but during our visit we sometimes found it to be open.

In conclusion if you enjoy camping and resort life then you will not be disappointed with Weesgerus.

What to expect: Friendly staff and a well maintained bushveld resort with lots of entertainment for the entire family on weekends.
